For applicants whose first language is not English, NEBOSH recommends a minimum English language competency of IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent). It is important to note that learners are not expected to have an IELTS or equivalent examination complete. NEBOSH International Fire Certificate

is based on international standards and best practice.  It is made up of three units which must be successfully completed within five years to achieve the NEB0SH International Fire Certificate qualification:

What does the qualification cover?

Principles of fire and explosion, causes and prevention of fires, fire protection in buildings and ensuring the safety of people in the event of fire. Crucially, the practical element of the course also ensures that participants can carry out, unaided, a fire risk assessment and prepare a recommendations report for management.

Assessment

The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:

  • Management of International Health and Safety (IGC1)*
  • International Fire Safety and Risk Management (IFC1)
  • Practical Fire Risk Assessment (FC2)

*  Students who have already passed IGC1 or FC2 as part of a previous NEBOSH qualification do not need to re-take them, provided it was achieved within the last 5 years.  If you achieved IGC1 more than 5 years ago or hold the NEBOSH International Diploma, you may re-sit the examination without needing to attend a taught course.

Units IGC1 and IFC1 are taught units each assessed by one two-hour written examination. Each written examination consists of ten ‘short-answer’ questions and one ‘long-answer’ question. All questions are compulsory. Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.

Unit FC2 is assessed by one three-hour fire risk assessment carried out in the candidate’s workplace. The assessment is marked by the accredited course provider and externally moderated by NEBOSH. Candidates will be required to complete the FC2 assessment within 14 days of sitting the examination for units IGC1 and/or FC1.

Professional Membership

  • Holders of the International Fire Certificate are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Technical Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH and Associate Membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
  • It also provides eligibility for Technician Membership (TIFPO) of the Institute of Fire Prevention Officers (IFPO) and meets the academic requirements for Associate Membership (AMIFPO).  Persons with the relevant skills and experience may also apply to join the IFPO Fire Risk Assessors Register.
  • The NEBOSH International Fire Certificate has been accredited and credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). It sits in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at SCQF Level 6 with 13 SCQF credit points.SCQF Level 6 is comparable to NQF/QCF Level 3 in England
