BHARUCH, GUJARAT, INDIA — Five workers died and five others were injured in an explosion at SynZeal Pharmachem in Gujarat’s Bharuch district on the night of 16 October 2026, according to reports published on 17 October by Akashvani News and The Indian Express.
The incident occurred at the Saykha GIDC industrial estate in Vagra taluka. Reporting places the explosion during a hydrogenation process, but the precise cause remains under investigation.
Industrial safety authorities investigate
Akashvani reported that pollution-control officials, industrial safety authorities and police attended the facility and that a joint investigation was underway. The Indian Express reported that the district administration directed the company to suspend operations pending further action.
District Collector N K Gavhane told The Indian Express that the administration was awaiting a preliminary report and that the exact cause was not yet known. The publication reported about 20 workers were at the plant.
Chemical-release reports remain provisional
Reports differ in how firmly they describe a subsequent gas release. Akashvani identified a chemical leak, while The Indian Express described a possible leak and reports of eye irritation. HSEBlog is not treating the substance, release quantity or exposure extent as independently confirmed findings.
Accounts also differ on the exact time and injured-worker totals. This report uses the five-injury figure shared by Akashvani and The Indian Express without presenting it as a final investigation finding.
Process-safety implications
HSEBlog analysis: The investigation will be important for understanding the sequence of events and whether process safeguards functioned as intended. It would be premature to identify a particular equipment defect, operating error or legal breach as the cause.
