What are APF and MUC?
The Assigned Protection Factor (APF) is the workplace level of respiratory protection a properly fitted respirator class is expected to provide when used in a complete programme. Maximum Use Concentration (MUC) is APF × occupational exposure limit (OEL) — the highest concentration that class should be used for against that limit.
Required APF = Contaminant concentration ÷ OEL (same units). Choose a respirator whose APF is at least the required value, and confirm the concentration is below the MUC and any IDLH / manufacturer limits.

Respirator · APF & MUC
Required APF = C ÷ OEL and MUC = APF × OEL. Same concentration units for both inputs. Not for IDLH / oxygen-deficient atmospheres.
Formula: Required APF = C ÷ OEL · MUC = APF × OEL
- APF tables vary by jurisdiction — confirm OSHA / local values.
- Fit testing and cartridge change schedules are mandatory for tight-fitting APR.
- Never use filter respirators for IDLH or oxygen deficiency based on MUC alone.
Common APF examples (OSHA-style)
- Half-mask air-purifying — APF 10
- Full-facepiece air-purifying — APF 50
- Powered air-purifying (helmet/hood) — often APF 25 (or higher when manufacturer and programme allow)
- Full-face powered air-purifying — APF 1000 (when listed)
- SCBA (pressure demand) — APF 10,000
Always confirm APFs in your jurisdiction’s table and the manufacturer’s instructions. Fit testing, cartridge change schedules, and IDLH rules still apply.
Frequently asked questions
What is an OEL here?
Use the limit your programme applies for that substance — PEL, TLV, WEL, or company limit — in the same concentration units as your measurement.
Does APF replace fit testing?
No. APF assumes a complete programme including fit testing for tight-fitting facepieces. A poor fit can erase the protection factor.
Can I use this above IDLH?
No. IDLH and oxygen-deficient atmospheres need SCBA or supplied-air with escape provisions per regulation — not a filter respirator chosen only by MUC.
What about combination hazards?
When several contaminants are present, follow mixture rules and the most restrictive required APF. This calculator handles one concentration–OEL pair at a time.
