OFFSHORE GABON — Borr Drilling confirmed on 25 October 2026 that its Prospector 5 drilling rig had lost stability and sunk during jacking operations offshore Gabon the previous evening. Its initial statement said 110 of the 115 people aboard were safely accounted for and five remained unaccounted for.
Incident during preparation for drilling
The company placed the incident at about 8:37 p.m. local time on 24 October. It said preliminary information indicated a punch-through event during preload activities. This is the company's initial explanation, rather than a completed independent technical investigation.
Prospector 5 was owned and operated by Borr and contracted for BW Energy's drilling operations. Borr said its onshore emergency team had been activated and was coordinating with authorities and its customer.
Later casualty account differs from initial statement
Reuters subsequently reported one death and four people missing, citing sources including a petroleum employees' organisation representative. Offshore Magazine also described that later account. It should not be confused with the earlier company statement, which listed five unaccounted for. HSEBlog attributes the reported death rather than implying that Borr's initial release confirmed it.
The reviewed sources did not establish a final cause, a concluded regulatory breach or a final search outcome.
