RAS AL KHAIMAH, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES — Ras Al Khaimah announced on 24 October 2026 that its beaches would close until further notice, as UAE authorities responded to an offshore tanker oil spill affecting neighbouring coastal areas.
Closure announced during wider coastal response
The emirate's Public Services Department issued the notice through Ras Al Khaimah Police. Reuters and local reporting said the notice did not specify a reason for the emirate's own closure. Its timing follows oil-related access restrictions in Umm Al Quwain and at Sharjah's Al Hamriyah Beach.
Khaleej Times reported that the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment had confirmed an oil spill off Umm Al Quwain, with containment, cleanup and environmental assessment under way. The article attributed to the ministry its statement that the odours reported in several emirates posed no health risk.
Environmental assessment continues
The reviewed reports did not establish the spill's cause, the tanker identity or a final quantity released. No reopening date was confirmed in the 24 October notices. Beach users and coastal businesses therefore need to refer to the relevant authority's current access instructions rather than assume a reopening.
HSEBlog context: The response involves both public access management and marine pollution control. The closure itself should not be read as a finding about the cause of the spill. Background is available in our guides to spill containment, hazardous waste management and emergency response planning.
