Cut volume vs spoil volume
In-situ (bank) excavation volume is typically L × W × D. Disturbed soil swells, so haul/spoil volume is larger:
Spoil V = Cut V × Swell factor (often about 1.2–1.4 depending on soil).
Excavation / Spoil Volume Calculator
Excavation · cut and spoil
Estimate rectangular cut volume and loose spoil with a swell factor. Not a shoring design tool.
Formula: Cut V = L × W × D · Spoil V = Cut V × Swell factor
- Rectangular prism only — batters need geometry breakdown.
- Protective systems follow soil/depth rules separately.
- Keep spoil heaps clear of trench edges.
Frequently asked questions
What swell factor should I use?
Ask the geotech or use site norms — clay and rock differ. 1.25 is a common teaching default only.
Battered sides?
This tool assumes a rectangular prism. For batters, break into prisms or use survey volumes.
Does this check shoring?
No. Protective systems follow depth, soil type, and regulations separately.
Units?
Keep L, W, D consistent (m → m³, or ft → ft³).
