How many fire extinguishers do I need?
For Class A (ordinary combustibles), many programmes size portable extinguishers from floor area, occupancy hazard, and the extinguisher’s A-rating. This free calculator estimates the minimum number of units using NFPA 10-style area-per-A-unit factors and reminds you of typical maximum travel distances.
It does not replace a fire-risk assessment, sprinkler design, or the full NFPA 10 / local code package for Class B/C/D/K, mounting heights, or inspection.

Fire extinguisher · Class A coverage
Estimate minimum extinguishers from floor area, hazard occupancy, and A-rating. Layout and travel distance can require more.
Formula: Units needed = Area ÷ (A-rating × ft² per A-unit)
- Class A ordinary combustibles only — not Class B/C/D/K spacing.
- Travel distance and partitions often increase the count.
- Inspect, maintain, and train per your fire programme.
Area per A-unit (indicative NFPA 10-style)
- Light hazard — 3,000 ft² (≈ 279 m²) per A-unit
- Ordinary hazard — 1,500 ft² (≈ 139 m²) per A-unit
- Extra hazard — 1,000 ft² (≈ 93 m²) per A-unit
Units needed = ceil( Floor area ÷ (A-rating × area per A-unit) )
Typical maximum travel distance to a Class A extinguisher is often 75 ft (22.9 m) — layout can require more extinguishers than the area formula alone.
Frequently asked questions
What is an A-rating?
The number before “A” on the extinguisher (e.g. 2-A, 4-A). Higher A-ratings cover more ordinary-combustible floor area per unit under the same hazard class.
Does this cover Class B flammable liquids?
No. Class B uses different spacing and extinguisher ratings. Use your fire code and NFPA 10 Class B rules separately.
Why might I need more than the calculated number?
Travel distance, multiple rooms, obstructed paths, outdoor yards, and local amendments often add extinguishers beyond the area formula.
Are sprinklers ignored?
Yes in this simple tool. Some jurisdictions allow trade-offs when sprinklers are present — follow the adopted code, not this estimate alone.
