EDENFIELD, LANCASHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM — Lancashire Police issued a witness appeal on Tuesday, October 27, after a site worker died in a collision at temporary utility works in Edenfield. A second worker was taken to hospital with injuries described by police as not life-threatening.
The fatal incident happened on Monday, October 26. Tuesday's appeal is a new investigation development: officers are seeking witnesses and footage from motorists who passed the works where contractors were erecting telegraph poles.
Three vehicles involved at the work site
Emergency services were called shortly after 11:20 a.m. to Rochdale Road, near the junction with Bridgemills and Plunge Road. Police said a green Deutz tractor, a Ford Transit van and a Mercedes dropside lorry were involved.
A worker in his 60s suffered fatal injuries at the scene. The injured worker is a man in his 30s. Police have not named either man in the appeal reviewed by HSE Blog.
The circumstances remain under investigation. The public statement does not establish how the collision developed, which vehicle movements preceded it or whether any party breached a safety requirement.
Police seek tractor and trailer sightings
Investigators particularly want to hear from anyone who saw a green tractor towing a black trailer in the area around the time of the collision. They are also seeking relevant CCTV, mobile-phone recordings and dashcam footage.
Anyone with information can contact Lancashire Police on 101, quoting log 0437 of October 26. The official appeal provides the investigation contact details.
HSE Blog analysis: temporary works meet live traffic
HSE Blog analysis: Utility installation creates an interface between workers, site vehicles and passing traffic. That interface needs a planned layout and active supervision as equipment, work positions and traffic conditions change.
General controls include suitable separation, clear vehicle routes, safe loading and unloading positions, protected pedestrian access and an agreed communication method for necessary vehicle movements. A traffic-management arrangement should be reassessed when the work area changes rather than assumed to remain suitable throughout the job.
These are prevention considerations, not conclusions about the Edenfield collision. HSE Blog's overview of traffic safety equipment for roadwork protection gives context on barriers, delineation and signs. Its construction-site safety guide covers broader planning and communication duties.
Reporting basis
The core facts and new witness appeal are confirmed by Lancashire Constabulary. Coverage was also located from Greatest Hits Radio and the Reach newsrooms at LancsLive and the Manchester Evening News; the two Reach titles were not counted as separate independent confirmations. Full access to some secondary pages was restricted, so the police statement remains the basis for the details reported here.
